The Most Unpleasant Path
Perpetual improvement—
you call it a trap,
I call it a moral necessity.
Until everything is known,
nothing is understood.
I am suspicious of any mind that thinks
that it only thinks concretely,
that only its concrete thoughts
are of any value.
I have less interest in forbidden fruit
(a category I barely acknowledge in any case)
than in hidden fruit. Following all the false
promises will get you, eventually, to truth,
but it is the most unpleasant path.
