What I Say

What I say is not what you hear.
What you say is not what I hear.
Even when we try to talk about the same
thing we talk about different things.
Mostly we don't try.
I'm tired of trying.
You go that way, and be quiet.
I'll go this way and keep quiet.
I may not know what I'm saying
when I say it to myself,
but at least I listen,
at least I seem to care.
Then again, when I speak
may be the only time I exist.
