We Almost Convinced Ourselves

We almost convinced ourselves
that there weren't bad people.
We almost convinced ourselves
that there were only different people
and that that, of course, was fine.
We almost convinced ourselves
that we didn't need strong defenses,
that we didn't need to ensure consequences
for bad behavior, that the moral arc
of history would bend all by itself
without our lifting a finger.
We almost convinced ourselves
that a white-hatted hero would appear
before it was too late and save us
just like in the movies.
We almost convinced ourselves
that the world was someone else's responsibility,
and that everything would always work out fine.
We almost convinced ourselves
that history or karma or God
would shield or shelter us.
