Unrequited

I love the world,
but how can I expect the world
to love me, given the treatment
it has received from others like me?
Like me yet unlike me.
I would love to be loved by the world.
At the same time,
we are making the world less lovable,
and I want to remain true to the world,
which is blameless,
but the heart haunts what the heart haunts....
I fantasize, lately, about another world,
a world without people.  Unhaunted.
I believe it would be easier to love.
