Two Apples

Is the knowledge of good and evil
the same as understanding consequence?
Had A&E eaten two apples,
would they have known how to disguise
their transgression, to divert attention,
to act as if everything were the same
even as everything was different?
What more is owed
an irritated host with fiat rules?

Or did they invent the long game,
the payoff only now coming into play:
a garden destroyed; an insult avenged;
two multiplied into a mad, avenging horde
to reject and ruin the consolation prize?
