To Replace

Because everything that is worsens,
they say, we must forever have new things.
Because everything rusts or rots,
cracks or breaks, tears or stains.
We must prepare to replace
what is now with another thing.
The dirt, the wear, the undesirable
roughening or smoothing of edges
force us to constantly hunt or construct
the next thing or risk being left
bereft, without or dissatisfied with
the lesser remnant of the original.
Love not the dying thing
when you are responsible for tomorrow.
