To Go

What I needed to grow was to go,
not to count pennies, not to total up the lack of dollars,
not to shrink until I fit someone else's scheme,
made sense to them, became a small force of reassurance.
What I needed was to go and confront the world,
and discover myself in, make myself of, the confrontation.
The worst thing we've done is to seal the exits.
The worst thing we've done is to say
"You are where you are when you start.
You are not the wandering, you are not
the discovery.  You are known."
I needed to move further, faster, freer,
and because I didn't, the question "Who am I?"
is unnecessary, unanswerable, unaskable.
