To Begin With

All the tributaries of this world
cannot bring restitution
sufficient to make me forget
(for is that not the purpose
of restitution?).  Bring it
elsewhere; take it to another,
one of faded devotion,
who has learned the spell
to dissipate love.
What was given me to begin with
has been diminished, and new gifts
will not repair the wear.
Make no offerings here:
I refuse even to reject them.
