Three Hyenas

I should have had three hyenas
who accompanied me everywhere, off-leash,
and kept away everything I didn't want.
And one sweet jackal
to lead me to everything I did.
A life on dusty roads,
entering a shining city, lingering, leaving
to move toward another, and a memory
that remembered all the right things
and forgot all the right things.
A life, in short, very different than I've had.
A banality wrapped in a frivolity.
A caravan of companions, dressed as inquiry,
following opportunity, delighting in discovery.
