Thinking Songs

consciousness depends upon
the ability to reject input,
sorting and aborting
data

what will we become
when we can no longer forget?
or is that a constraint
that keeps us shamed
in sameness?

even logic, reason, are Darwinian,
weaving complexity from simplicity,
initiations of intuition,
the immanence of insight
and dead thoughts, diatoms,
an ecstasy of confusion,
a revelation of dismay,
higher-level adaptation
still dependent upon
lower-level composition

a narrative like a relay,
with the plot repeatedly handed off

understanding precipitates from engagement,
result from action, every flicker contains a closing
door, illumination that so often seems to condemn

we don't even know if intelligence is possible
without illusion, without fiction, without lie,
transcendental medication
for migrating headaches
in the mindless mildness

how far should we go
to resist appropriation,
which after all is continuity,
just not on our own terms?

we are contiguous, not continuous
