The World 5

The world takes everything back,
sometimes too soon, sometimes
not soon enough.  The world
never gives, it only lends.
It never invented rent,
but we did.  The world said
all this is mine, and you
are mine, and I have time
to show you that you don't.
We told ourselves we had to pay
for the privilege and then right away
began looking for ways to not pay,
and why not?  Every bit of our wealth
already belongs to the world.
