The Story 4
“If I'm sincere today, what does it matter if I regret it tomorrow?”
                                                                                  — José Saramago, Blindness

It is difficult for any relationship to be successful
if you don't know the story the other person is trying to make of you.
How often we say "attached" when we mean "attracted."
Is there anyone as fearful as the imperturbable?
Where is the woman whose strange appetite I am made to sate?
Your offer to spread your spreadsheets across my sheets.
The rich man who would only have sex
with women with bad all-over sunburns
(which he'd pay them to acquire).
Anything, forsooth, can be Shakespearean.
You could get rich! they said.
But I declined their offer to spend decades
making a collage of monkey scrotums.
There was never anyone to tell me there would never be anyone.
