The Stars 2

The stars are ghosts in the all-night,
temporal illusions that haunt us
as we flash in and out of existence,
bright, silent, distant;
there but not there; unaware
of the distance they have traveled,
or how they have unraveled; attenuated
across emptiness, becoming less and less
the further they go.
Though we try to contain them
in self-referential stories,
they elude our primitive framework.
They have just enough left to be seen,
but not enough to illuminate anything.
