The Serenade
the serenade was not serene
was shrill and needy and
easily off-shrugged (if not dismissed)
and it was embarrassing
embarrassing!
how little I needed
to be sung to like that
at that time of relative wealth
when all the world
yes all the world
was a song
being sung
