The Sea of Sadness

As the Sea of Sadness rises
to your knees, to your waist, to your chest,
you must swim to islands of joy.
There is no ebb, only the rising,
and you must make a raft
of everything you find,
every bit of trash and flotsam,
the wreckage, the debris,
to crawl up on and rest a moment
from the sadness into which you
are sinking, deeper today than yesterday,
and deeper still tomorrow.
Swim, swim, so long as you can,
then drown.
