The Poems of the Dead

We have no time to read the poems of the dead.
We should.
An excess of living poets regurgitate
poems onto us in numbers beyond counting,
but how many of them transcend the age
and speak to us of a deeper humanity?
They are speaking all together, all at once—
cacophony!
The poems of the dead are quieter.
They use words differently, and use different words.
If they spoke only to their era, they are quiet indeed,
but some, indifferent to the deaths of their poets,
continue to do what they were intended to do:
make a space for art irrespective of time.

All poems are written and copyrighted by Michael C. Rush.
None may be republished or repurposed without permission.
