The Only Thing 2

I had a hole in my heart.
But it worked just fine until I met you.

I had been the second-fastest person my age
in the state of Louisiana.

I should have known that you would generalize
your self-hatred to everyone else, to me.

But I thought that if I loved you,
you would come to love yourself,

which would allow you to love me.
I was young. I was used to running fast

with a hole in my heart and winning winning winning!
I'm not claiming I was perfect,

but the only thing that ever stood between us
was you.
