The Heroes and Villains

It's not the heroes and villains
plotting the limits of persuasion confronted with loyalty
that I mind so much,
it's the mannikins, the mimes, the ventriloquists' dummies
who don't wrestle
with how much that is unnecessary seems inevitable.

Membership is bogus.
But we love it so.
We can love anything.
This is a problem
with irrationality.
It doesn't even require
justification.

How much control can we exercise over our reactions to things?
Or, how much are we responsible for ourselves?
Or, how much of self is awareness, how much control?
And, how much can awareness be controlled by awareness?

Rather than condemn things,
I'm trying to learn to think
I would have done it differently.
But too often I can't
even do what I do
the way I would do it.
