The Futures

It is not enough
to untether yourself from time
and aim for the future:
you must choose with particular care
where you would surface,
and there's the rub:
how to aim?

An infinity of tomorrows,
and many of them intolerable.
Give me one of those
that make me better—
better than I am now
and better than I would be
in the others.

Currently I am falling, failing,
into one of the worst.
Inevitably, they tell me,
but how could that be?
Unless everything is a lot smaller
than I have been led to believe,
there must be a way to
alter my trajectory.
