The Futility

Once begun, a thing continues until it's gone.
At first we think this miraculous.  Then, a horror.
It isn't either.  The inexorable defies interpretation.
What initiates is followed by what follows.
We may see the firefly light here, there,
somewhere else in the darkness.  But not
the first flash, or the last.  Not the necessity
that strings them together.  And not the futility
of what we boldly label destiny.
