The Forever Whisper

There are people not worth loving,
and yet we love them, and,
loving them, we must justify our love,
so we say look, love is worth loving!
But it isn't.  The more we love,
the harder we chase the madness
we're taught (often self-taught) to sanctify
with the symbols of love,
the sooner we find ourselves lying
broken among other rubble,
unable to resume what seemed natural,
inevitable before, whispering defiantly
forever They were not worth loving—
but oh! how I loved them!
