The Elephant

The elephant in the room
is that for the people of the future
the elephant in the room
is that there is no elephant
in or outside of their room
because of us.

Instead of bequeathing them an elephant
to impoverish them a la the King of Thailand of old,
we bequeath them no elephant to impoverish them.

I'd like to think they'll never forgive us
our selfish dyscalculia, but I know
it won't even come to that:
they'll forget us instead
and our efforts to cheapen experience
enough to be able to afford it.

We resent history because it's immune to us.
We adore only what we destroy.
We are a match,
not a torch.
