The Divergence

Is it worse to become not what I am,
not what I want to be, or nothing at all?

The divergence of the roads
need not concern us;

it's the divergence of our hearts
that seems intolerable.

Various elaborations of our instincts,
various impeachments of our impulses.

Bone never part of a body,
wood never part of a tree.

Life long ago learned
to manipulate chance and change.

I long to harmonize,
but my shrill will sings still.
