The Deficit

I forgot, for a moment, my deficit,
and, oh, how the world made me pay!

When I change my mind I change my self,
and when I change myself I seem to mind.

What can what you are not shown make
of what you make with what you are shown?

As you do the things you need to do
you become yourself.

I must write every one of my poems
to get to my last poem, to find my best poem.

What is wanted is not faith in tomorrow,
but in our ability to respond to tomorrow's demands.

I know I don't dream life,
for I could never dream death.
