The Count

Every increase of life increases death.
More born means more die.
How many fish has the sea seen?
How many fish has the sea seen eaten?
Enough to fill every wave with swimming skeletons?
Can the sky hold all the birds that were?
Dare we calculate the total mass of insects once extant?

There have been so many.
They came and went.
We never knew them, or forgot.
Who could bear the count?
We want to worship life, but life
is just the moment required to give death meaning.
Life is necessary, says the world, but not sufficient.
