The Castle

Looking back,
I see all the things I set down
and left behind.
Few of them willingly.
I envisioned a great castle at the end of the road,
warmly lit and waiting
for me where I would store and display
and preserve everything I'd acquired
along the way.  Instead,
most everything was taken back again,
was lost as I moved down the path,
and every castle I have seen has been occupied
and barricaded, barred, with narrow eyes
peering from narrow windows at me as I pass.
I continue on, with an ever-lightening load,
and more and more it seems
my destination is the ditch.
I tried to bring the world,
but all I managed to convey was the word.
