The Ashes

And they will always replace
the stories of history
with stories of personal glory
or imminent disaster.
Love not those who want you afraid.
What is wanted is continuity, not stasis.
When nothing seems possible, do anything.
The best people are made of enthusiasm and doubt,
as, of course, are the worst.

Today, my mourning is that for the death
of an erudite man or woman.
I sit in the ashes of a burned library,
sifting what was into what is, and,
being what it is, is not.
