That Whistling Sound
I wished to wish for better things,
but I did not get my wish.
(No one ever does,
for that would be contrary to the ethic of wishes.)
If you are fortunate indeed
you will be equally immune
to the blowback of the wishes of others.
Hear that whistling sound?
That is the sound of loss.
(Not the only sound of loss.)
Do you wish you had wished better?
Do you wish you had whistled louder?
Nothing happened as it was meant to,
because nothing was meant to.
