The Ghost of a Poem of a Ghost of a Poem

Anything that helps you to see.
                               Anything that makes you look.
                                      —Flannery O'Connor

Conventional wisdom doesn't consider
personal determination.

I persist in believing that in a world of pretense
there is value in at least pretending sincerity.

So much of what we hold out,
hand forward, is rebuffed, rejected.

I will approve the convoluted
but not the confused.

The hardest falsehood to reject
is what should be true but isn't.

Art will not save you.
It may lift you high enough

to see something you could love
as it goes.
