Spring Scenario

Let us promenade down leafy boulevards
observing strangers
observed by stranger strangers
holding hands
while anticipating kisses and lunch.

Let us remember, briefly,
what has already been between us
and let us imagine, smiling,
what may yet be.

Let us rejoice in the dappled patterns
of sun and shade, of desire and regret,
and anticipate equal celebrations.

Let us step eagerly along the sidewalk
and smell spring in the petals we tread upon.

Let us allow ourselves this.
