Spoiled
We were spoiled, having grown up
when less people were out to get us,
when we could pretend that the world was
immune to the human infection.
I can't abide a regressive.
Which makes me a regressive
in this day of omnitolerance.
Is there anything uglier than stupidity?
Cruelty, you say?
Okay.
But they are two faces of failure.
I love the idea of people
(and the ideas of people).
The reality of people,
less so.
The ones I can't forgive are the ones
who choose selfishness
(which is the soil and root of all evil).
Whatever room we reserved
for the eventual achievement of greatness
gets filled with loss and regret
and the missing of what has gone.
There is not room in me
to miss everything I have known.
I must take it in shifts.
