Something 6

Something has gone out of the world
that held it together, that animated it.
Now it collapses before my eyes.
How strange, to see the result
of the loss of the essential element
and not to know what it was!
What did we have that we have no longer?
What did we need that we need so still?
Now it shatters and breaks apart,
now its connections release and cease.
How strange, to reach for a link
and find it gone.
Memory of what was is the last thing to remain,
and the most certain to go.
