Sleep Injuries

"Sleep is what I'll miss most when I die."
                                                 —Anna Kamienska

sleep is not death, you fools!
the wave goes up, the wave goes down—
the straight line is the wrong answer
that everyone keeps getting!

frozen deep in the unseen majority of an iceberg—
sleeping or dead? dead for now or dead for always?—
and a dawn comes, different than other dawns,
and all ice is melting everywhere,
though it's still damn cold

what I like about sleep
is not the cessation of consciousness
but its renewal
