Skeptic's Song

Doubt hurts, but certainty, certainly, is worse.
As we play our repertoire of repetition,
as we practice it together and rehearse

each and every obsessive addition
so that our performance will convince
our audience of the authenticity of our condition,

we enhance the consensual pretense that since
we agree to agree that this is such and such is so,
all that we don't comprehend cannot make us wince

with inconclusion. &bnsp; But while we go forth as sure as though
we carried in our thoughts a perfect understanding,
the universe scoffs at just how little we actually do know.

Better, I think, to progress through life demanding
better answers, the inconceivability of reality notwithstanding.
