Say Shakespeare went to heaven

Say Shakespeare went to heaven
and has been writing ever since.
Say Aristophanes.  Say Balzac,
say Goethe, say Twain.
Dickinson, Keats, Sappho.
Who has time to read all that?
Who could afford to drown on greatness,
to lose themselves in endless
brilliant otherness, genius?
Homer, Tolstoy, Cervantes.
Thank heaven they are stilled,
stopped, denied words.
Even an infinity of expression
would not be enough, for them, forever.
