Resistance

step aside they say
softly at first
and easily ignored
but then ever louder
and more persistent
they begin to insist
that I listen to them
but I already heard them and
they may have missed it
dismissed them and
their command
their injunction
which challenges my plan
my plan
my own damn plan
which they don't know
and did they know wouldn't
understand or approve
would definitely not love
which is to step
indeed
but forward
ever forward
never back
not aside
so the air is full of stop
and step and worse
to breathe than it used to be
and my ears are as vulnerable
to the air as my mouth
which has moved from kisses
to the making of sounds
which would benefit from
but don't need
a little of that air
stopped with the starts
of the shameless scabs
the guileless newbs gathering
preparing their desperate
stampede toward tomorrow
relentlessly oblivious
to those of us
already in the way
