Reluctant Elegy

The quest for self-knowledge leads to the collapse of life.
                                 —Colotes of Lampsacus (paraphrased)

What do I have that I don't know I have?
What do I need that I don't know I need?
What can I do that I don't know I can do?
What am I that I don't know I am?

Unapologetic for the problematic,
unaware of the cost of calculating costs,
ill-equipped to gather the data of the deceivers,
choice, chance, and circumstance,
we take for granted the miracles
that everyone can do.

And, when we have destroyed everything
worth having, we will forget,
we will forget and absolve our sins
in ignorance.
