Upon finding a lintel a mere hand above sand
who can resist digging, excavating, hoping?

What can be reclaimed?

            a scent ascent
            of edible edifice

            the repetitive demand
of birdchirp, of insect, of speech

            the wonders of unacknowledged phenomena
            the unusual, the novel

            somber humor
            rhyme and time

            the small permission
            between desire and need

            a seed-laden
            deed for the dead

            unscheduled days of madness
            and lonely nights

            leisure, please
