Preference

A bold start
or a persuasive conclusion?

Should we regret
that we will always love
poems of love
over poems of regret?

Word expresses equally.
We feel preferentially.

Which is the more vital
function of knowledge,
to be more successful in the world
or to know the knower thereby?

The passions and enthusiasms
we dream comprise an entity called “love”
are as multiple, as variable,
as incapable of collapse,
as the minor infinity I summarize as “I.”

We long for the adulation of fire;
what we find is tender ice.
