Our Prayer

We ask
to be seen.
To be seen as different
than the rest.
To matter
as individuals,
not just in aggregate.
Impossible things,
we ask for an impossible thing.
We ask that recognition be given
and act as though it were certain.
We ask for permission
and don't receive it.
We ask for forgiveness
and don't receive it.
We ask to be seen
as we see ourselves to be.
We ask, we ask,
we ask again.
With one voice
we ask for one thing.
Together,
we ask to be separate.
Nothing answers.
Nothing can.
And still we ask,
because the asking itself
asserts our claim.
