Only Ever

I've only ever been any good at being me.
And everyone and everything seems so opposed to that.

You must acquire, they said,
so you have something when the time comes to trade.

What the sound wants to say makes no sense.
What the sense wants to say makes no sound.

Must everything have the head of a dragon
and the tail of a snake?

I will love only what loves me.
I will breathe only the air in the eye of the needle.

Take only what is replenished
or doesn't require replenishment.

But how will I relinquish my loneliness
when death calls?
