Of The Confusion

Winnowed now through attrition,
I obsess over growth, over memories of growth,
and privilege what goes over what lingers.

We are schooled in time
of the confusion of concatenation with growth,
of expansion with growth, of acquisition.

One so big cannot be made to fit
into one so small without sacrifice,
and so we acquiesce to the demands

for offerings, for casual or careless abandonment,
that we should relinquish whatever we believe we have
in order to prepare for our shrinking allotment.

But everything is so enormous!
How can subtracting infinitesimal me from it improve it?
