Now, Now

I don't want to tell you a story.
I want to inhabit a story, stories,
and I want to investigate it, them,
figure them out, understand,
but to tell it?  To entice your attention
with blithe narrative?  No.
I have many things to tell you,
but none of them recount occasions,
events, over and done.  Now, now,
stay with me here, in the now,
don't look for, settle for, distraction
in someone else's memory or dream.
There is comfort in chatter,
but it doesn't matter.
