Noblesse Oblige

It has been discovered
that Iraqi children,
upon dissection,
are not full of life
like our kids.

It has become known
that many families in Afghanistan
don't gather as a clan
in warm and loving homes
like we do.

We have recently learned
that those who sell drugs in Mexico
don't understand that competition
strengthens the economy
and should be encouraged.

It has come to our attention
that the terrorists in Guantanamo,
unlike our homeless and underemployed,
won't eat the food they're offered.
No reassurances will be forthcoming.

Even eunuchs with meaty fists
used to blush to profit from death.
But without shame, infamy fails,
collapses into celebrity, traitors
translating treachery into culture

while the corpses cross the Styx
strategically concealed
to keep death a secret
from those for whom the reminder
would be inconvenient.

No longer are we “more numerous than bullets.”
There are more unknown mass graves
than those we see and can't see. See?
Mapping connections becomes more important
than mapping territory.

Direct the portfolio managers
to acquire annuities
in ambiguities
so we can retire vaguely, gradually
withdraw from the going concerns.
