My Gift To You
I still wonder about
the things I wondered about
fifty years ago.
It seems unlikely.
For a number of reasons.
But we tend to put
much too much faith
in seems.
My gift to you was to allow you
to refuse my gift.
It has become a different thing
because I could not restrict it
to what it was.
I'm not sure which is harder
to measure in another:
malevolence or love.
When you realize you heard
when you realize you read
all the stories except the ones
you needed most.
What will be held against us
is what we didn't regret,
what we didn't mourn.
