Leper Bordello

The afterlife, they said,
is a leper bordello,
where you're either paying
or taking payment.
The best of us become obstetricians,
helping birth the endless parade of babies
that are returned to Earth.
It is dim and layered in shadow,
and all the gray tongues recite litanies
of obstruction, lists of excuses they used
for not making each moment alive radiant
to spark memories of light
to carry past death and help endure
these drudge orgies.
