Last Poems

Suddenly I am interested
in the poems of octogenarians,
in collections subtitled "Last Poems."
When we have said so much
across a lifetime,
what will we choose to say
when the words are running out,
when we are running out?
Facing true silence,
will we finally manage true utterance?
Do we try to sum up,
draw conclusions?
Or do we, again, reach for something new
to say, to make, to do?
