Just Before
Just before the best, the worst, they say.
Just before the worst, the best, they say.
But best and worst are not
equally or evenly distributed.
Chance thwarts prediction,
and not all pattern is crafted from correlation.
Hope and fear are imaginary threads
that color the quilt of our understanding.
Just before and just after
are arbitrary designations,
centered on a chosen focus.
We exist in during,
and the peaks of best and worst
don’t pertain in the Valley of Better and Worse.
