It Has Happened Before

It has happened before, he thought,
I have thought that it has happened before before.
And now I am thinking it again as I did then.
Is it—the occurrence, the thought—
repetition or reenactment? Recognition?
The moment when it starts to happen,
the moment when it finishes, the moments in between:
which contribute more to memory, to identity
to the structure of the world?
I have wondered this before.  I have worded this before.
I expect to wonder again, word again, though I may or may not.
Actually, something else happened before,
that I am equating to what happened now.
Happened to someone else.
Nothing has ever happened twice.
It seems—only seems—like everything has happened.
And I am still thinking about that, he thought,
as I have done before, as I am always doing.
