In The Previous Line

Past is naturally prelude
unless we hold it like a kitten
and carry it through the fire
to set down on our grave.
If you can't believe one person, it's preposterous
to claim you believe history. Yes, we try, some of us.
We try so many things. Permanent crisis syndrome.
But success is chance and massive redundancy.
Aggregate advance. A range of compromise
when the moral conflicts with the practical.
The individual is an incarnation of the probable.
We must repeat what we want remembered.
What I put on the page is me
more than the I in the previous line.
